COMPTON — City Manager Lawrence M. Moore died suddenly last Friday of undiagnosed diabetes, police said Tuesday.
On the same day that more than 300 city officials and staff attended a local memorial service for Moore, police said the 54-year-old was never aware of his illness.
“He wasn’t feeling well and was told he had allergies,” said Lt. Danny Sneed. “He died in a diabetic coma. He never knew he had diabetes.”
Assistant City Manager John Thompson has been named acting city manager. The City Council will appoint a permanent replacement and probably will take the matter up at its meeting today, said city spokesman Keith Davis.
Moore died Friday afternoon shortly after he was found unconscious in his room at the Radisson Hotel, where he was living.
Moore had just completed his first year as city manager.
A funeral will be held Friday in Richmond.
