The city plans to apply for a grant to install an emergency call box along the La Palma Promenade. The City Council on Tuesday approved plans to apply for $2,500 from the California Greenways Creative Grant program to partially pay for one of three call boxes planned for the promenade. To use the call box, a person just has to press a single button, which automatically dials police and activates a bright strobe light. The Police Department also wants to eventually mount video cameras on the boxes. All three boxes will cost a total of $18,500, and the city will pay for them even if it doesn’t get the grant.
