CAMP PENDLETON — A military helicopter hovering about five feet above the ground flipped over and crashed Friday at Camp Pendleton, injuring two Marines.
One pilot was hospitalized with minor injuries, said Maj. Stephen Kay, a Marine Corps spokesman. A second pilot suffered bruises and scrapes and was taken to the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital for observation, he added.
The accident involving a Cobra light-attack helicopter occurred at 12:09 p.m. during a routine training exercise at the Marine base north of San Diego, Kay said.
The helicopter was flying over a field when it struck the ground and flipped over onto its side. It was unclear whether the smashed aircraft could be repaired. The helicopter was not carrying any weaponry at the time, Kay said.
The names of the crew members were not released. The cause of the accident was under investigation.
