Pepperdine 64, Portland 51--Jelani Gardner scored 23 points, 17 in the second half, to help rally the Waves (10-6) past the Pilots (6-7) in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams at Portland, Ore.
Portland led, 31-29, at halftime. But Gardner scored seven consecutive points in a 12-0 run early in the second half.
Portland got within 56-51 with 3:43 left on one of two free throws by Jimmie Rainwater. But Pepperdine then went on a game-deciding 8-0 run.
Rainwater led the Pilots with 15 points.
