Coastal City Temperatures Set Record Highs

Holiday shoppers worked up a sweat Monday, but not because Christmas was five days away. There was record-breaking heat in both Oxnard and Ventura, according to the National Weather Service.

The mercury rose to 83 degrees in both coastal cities, breaking the records of 82 in Oxnard and 81 in Ventura, both recorded in 1954.

“Warm weather has been with us for a few days now,” said Jonathan Slemmer, a federal meteorologist in Oxnard. “And I don’t necessarily expect it to let up soon.”

High temperatures today should be in the high 70s, Slemmer said. Cooler air from the Northeast may arrive late Wednesday, dropping temperatures a few degrees.

Monday was the second time in a week a record high was set in the county. On Saturday, it was 85 degrees in Simi Valley, breaking the daytime record of 82 set in 1979.
