The Brea motorcycle officer injured Tuesday in a Yorba Linda traffic collision will have to spend about two weeks in the hospital recovering from multiple fractures in his legs, police said Wednesday.
Officer Thomas Bischetsrieder underwent seven hours of surgery Tuesday to treat a compound fracture and broken bones in both ankles and feet, Brea Sgt. Jeff Keyworth said. A steel rod was inserted into his lower left leg to help stabilize a compound fracture in his left tibia.
“Right now, the biggest danger is infection to the open fracture,” Keyworth said.
Police are still investigating the accident, which occurred at 8:20 a.m. in the 18200 block of Yorba Linda Boulevard. They said Bischetsrieder was involved in a collision between his motorcycle and a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero driven by Selma Angelica Rodrigues, 39, of Placentia.
