Houston Clinches Spot in Playoffs

Cynthia Cooper scored 25 points and had five assists Friday night as the Houston Comets clinched a spot in the WNBA playoffs with an 81-51 victory over the Charlotte Sting before a crowd of 13,308 at Houston.
Cooper, the league’s leading scorer at 21.6 points per game, scored 17 points during a 26-0 run in the first half as the Comets took command.
The Comets, who outrebounded the Sting, 41-18, have won seven consecutive games and eight in a row at home.
Phoenix 68, New York 55--Maria Stepanova of the Mercury scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds for her first career double-double before 12,884 at Phoenix.
Jennifer Gillom added 15 points for the Mercury.
Crystal Robinson scored a career-high 27 points and made six of 10 three-point shots to lead New York.
Sacramento 71, Detroit 58--Ticha Penicheiro had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Monarchs before 6,893 at Sacramento.
