School Board Candidate Faces Court Challenge

Lawyers challenging whether Robert Miranda lives in the neighborhood that he hopes to represent on the Alhambra school board will ask a judge Friday to allow him to be deposed immediately.

Court regulations usually require 30 days to lapse from the filing of a lawsuit before a deposition in a case can be taken.

But attorney Glenn Rothner said the order is required to ensure that the issue can be resolved before the Nov. 3 election. Miranda is seeking to represent the 5th nominating district of the Alhambra city and high schools district.

Miranda, under Alhambra school district election laws, must reside in his nominating district.

The lawsuit contends that he lives outside the 5th District, in a home he owns with his wife in Alhambra on Orange Avenue. He registered his address in nomination papers on Cathryn Drive.

Miranda said he lives at both locations, paying $65 a month in rent for the Cathryn Drive address. He said the lawsuit is politically motivated.

The suit was filed by John Nunez, president of the Garvey School Board, which serves elementary and middle school students.

Miranda is also a member of that school board.
