Montclair Prep 19, Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 14--Running back Gary Sonkur rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns in 32 carries for the Mounties (5-2) in a nonleague victory at Valley College.
The Montclair Prep defense, which had allowed an average of 152 yards in its first six games, surrendered 314 to the Eagles (3-3-1). But the Mounties, who finished with 308 yards, had few problems moving the ball.
Calvary Chapel went ahead, 6-0, on 39-yard touchdown pass play from Keith Short to Mike Kobzeff.
Sonkur scored on a 10-yard run midway through the second quarter to put the Mounties ahead , 7-6.
Touchdown runs of three yards in the third quarter and four yards in the fourth by Sonkur extended Montclair Prep’s lead to 19-6 before the Eagles scored in the waning minutes. Short connected with Kobzeff on an 18-yard pass play with 1:37 remaining, then Short ran for a two-point conversion.
Short rushed for 147 yards in 29 carries and passed for 86 yards including the two touchdowns. He completed five of 12 passes.
