Campgrounds Will Close

Storm damage caused by this year’s heavy rains has forced the temporary closure of the San Onofre Bluffs campground at San Onofre Beach.
The campgrounds will be closed beginning Monday through May, city parks and recreation officials announced this week.
A geologist will be studying the area to figure out which trails are safe, which are in need of repair and how to best go about making repairs that will ensure long-term safety, says Kevin Forrester, spokesman for the Orange Coast District of the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
Among the maintenance projects are sealing a road, reopening a trail, improving various campsites and monitoring erosion.
Day-use parking at San Onofre will still be allowed in designated areas from 6 a.m. to sunset, and the San Mateo campground at the park will remain open, officials said.
Six of seven trails also will remain open for hikers and bicyclists. Contact park rangers in San Clemente at (949) 366-8588 for more information.
