Playing It Safe When Getting Fast Cash

A string of robberies at automated teller machines across Southern California a few years ago prompted some banks to shut down their machines during late night and early morning hours. Crimes involving ATMs have declined, but police still urge users to be careful. Here are some tips:

* Use ATMs that are well-lighted. Avoid using machines that are in dark or hidden areas.

* Park your car in a well-lighted areas of the parking lot.

* Before stopping, survey the area for loiterers.

* Put checks and deposit slips together while sitting in your locked car. Spend as little time as possible in front of the ATM.

* Have someone with you if you’re using an ATM at night.

* Keep car keys in your hand.

* Have your card ready. Avoid fumbling around when next to the ATM.

* Cancel the transaction and leave if you sense trouble.

* At a drive-up ATM, keep the passenger-side window closed and the doors locked.

* Be aware of others around you.

* Never write down your account’s access code.

* Return to the car before counting cash.

* Don’t flash your cash around.

* Take your receipt from the ATM. Don’t leave it lying around because it contains important information about your bank account.
