EU Leaders Promise to Fight Joblessness

European Union leaders ended a two-day summit in Vienna by vowing to combat unemployment. The summit, dominated for the first time by center-left governments, placed the fight against joblessness at the top of the group’s political agenda. Weeks before the launch of Europe’s single currency, governments urged one another to be similarly ambitious in setting goals to get the bloc’s 17 million unemployed people working. They pledged a series of initiatives, particularly for women and the young.
