Reward for Thais Who Turn Lepers In for Care

Associated Press

In an effort to rid the Thai capital of an age-old disease, Bangkok authorities have announced cash rewards to those who bring new victims of leprosy to hospitals.

An official with the city’s Disease Control Division said the program seeks to aid early detection of leprosy and control its spread. Rewards range from $6.75 for an early case of leprosy to $13.50 for each chronic case. It was unclear whether lepers would receive money if they sought treatment on their own.
