Esperanza Tops Downey Warren on Games

Esperanza’s Ana Rodriguez and Jocelyn Tilan pulled out a 7-5 victory in the last set to tie the score, 9-9, giving Esperanza a 79-76 victory on games over Downey Warren in the first round of the Division I tennis playoffs Friday at Yorba Linda Country Club.
Rodriguez and Tilan finished the day, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Playing together for the first time, Erica Baluyot and Joyan Chang finished 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, picking up six key games in their losses at No. 3 doubles. Esperanza (16-3) hosts Chino Hills Ayala today at 2 p.m.
In Division I:
Capistrano Valley 18, Long Beach Jordan 0--Jenny Bailey, the No. 1 singles player for Capistrano Valley (13-6) won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, in the Cougars’ victory over Long Beach.
Capistrano Valley will host Los Alamitos today at 2 p.m. in the second round.
Long Beach Wilson 13, Santa Ana 5--Stephanie Newell, Kate Thomas and Andrea Pompei swept their singles sets to help lift Long Beach Wilson to a first-round victory over visiting Santa Ana.
Doubles team Amanda Fults and Olivia Tapia won two sets, 6-4, 6-1, for Santa Ana (9-7). Diana and Imelda Ramirez also won two sets for Santa Ana. Long Beach Wilson improves to 12-3.
Los Alamitos 14, Long Beach Poly 4--Los Alamitos’ Shauna Brodsky won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Griffins (13-4).
Newport Harbor 18, Moreno Valley Valley View 0--Brooke Taylor, Chelsea Godbey and Audra Adams led the sweep for host Newport Harbor (15-6).
The Sailors won all but one game in singles. Newport Harbor lost only four games in the match.
Woodbridge 16, Crescenta Valley 2--Susanna Lingman, Rachel Gunther and Danielle Hustedt combined to lose only three games in singles for Woodbridge (17-3), which hosts Upland in the second round today.
In Division II:
Mater Dei 18, Hesperia Sultana 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Kristen Hoppe and Sarah Luckey started the blitz as Mater Dei did not lose a game in doubles play. Mater Dei is 13-5.
University 16, Corona Centennial 2--Lucy Molnar and Annie Pham did not lose a game in doubles to lead University (14-4). The Trojans play Cerritos Gahr today at Cerritos College at 1 p.m.
In Division IV:
La Habra 11, La Quinta 7--La Habra’s No. 1 singles player Dominique Stasiewicz won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, in the Highlanders’ victory over La Quinta (8-8).
