Fields and Dreams: When the major league...

Fields and Dreams: When the major league baseball draft ended Thursday after three days and 92 rounds, several more names had been added to the Valley region’s long list of early selections. Here are some recent selections who have made it to the majors:

Bonjour, Montreal: First baseman Ryan McGuire, who graduated from El Camino Real High, had two hits in his major league debut with the Montreal Expos on Thursday against Atlanta. McGuire was batting .299 at triple-A Ottawa when called up. The Boston Red Sox chose McGuire in the third round in 1993 but traded him to the Expos in January of last year.

Hot Fastball: One round before choosing McGuire, Boston took Jeff Suppan, whose impressive fastball made him a standout at Crespi High. The right-hander made his Boston debut last July 17, losing to Kansas City, 4-3. He later returned to the minors but recently was recalled by the Red Sox and had a 2.41 earned-run average with no decisions in three starts through Friday.

In Limbo: Right-hander Derek Wallace broke in late last season as a reliever with the New York Mets and quickly set a team record, striking out four batters in one inning. But the Chatsworth High product, who was selected 11th overall in 1992 by the Chicago Cubs, is rehabilitating from surgery for a shoulder aneurysm.
