Gossip as News

* Dan Schnur’s first paragraph (Column Right, May 29) says a lot about “news” today. I quote: “Originally, this was going to be a column about the expansion of NATO to include the former Soviet republics. But, lucky for you--and unlucky for Bill Clinton--some- thing better got in the way.”

This is the viewpoint that has driven important news out of the “real” newspapers like The Times. Gossip has won again and the public is given the idea that policy, domestic or foreign, is uninteresting and unimportant. No wonder the public doesn’t vote or feel any responsibility for its own government.
