EPSOM, England — Benny The Dip won Saturday’s 218th English Derby at Epsom Downs in a photo finish over Silver Patriarch.
Benny the Dip, the third choice at 11-1 and ridden by Willie Ryan, took the lead with about one-quarter mile to run, then held off fast-charging Silver Patriarch, a 6-1 choice ridden by Pat Eddery. Romanov was third, at 25-1.
Favorite Entrepreneur, at 6-4, finished fourth and was never in contention.
The race, attended by Queen Elizabeth II, was run amid heightened security after the Grand National steeplechase two months ago was postponed for 48 hours by a bomb threat by the Irish Republican Army.
The 50,000 fans attending the Derby were searched and cars were checked. In a test of security on Friday, the main race and grandstand area were cleared in five minutes.
Bookmakers were expected to take in $64 million in bets on the race.
