Skieresz Takes Distance Double at NCAA Meet

Amy Skieresz of Arizona, a graduate of Agoura High School, won the 5,000 meters in 15 minutes 46.76 seconds at the NCAA track and field championships Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., becoming the first woman to hold the 5,000 and 10,000 titles since Midre Hamrin of Lamar in 1983.

Skieresz won the 10,000 on Friday by more than one minute with a 33:14.22 clocking.

Another Agoura alumnus, Ryan Wilson, helped Arkansas win its sixth consecutive men’s championship and 13th in 14 years.

Wilson finished second in the 5,000 Saturday in 13:46.18 after placing third in the 10,000 on Wednesday in 29:06.81.

Mebrahtom Keflezighi of UCLA became the first men’s double-champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters since Ed Eystone of Brigham Young in 1985, clocking 13:44.17 to beat Wilson by nearly 15 meters.

Baseball

Registration for the second annual Future of America Father’s Day Day at the Yard will be taken through Wednesday.

The Father’s Day Day at the Yard for boys 7 and older and their fathers, stepfathers, uncles or father figures is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon June 15 at the Ventura College baseball field.

Instruction in stretching and warmup techniques, hitting and fielding will be given.

There will be Father-son competition in long-ball hitting, throwing accuracy, base-running and bunting.

Cost is $75 per father-son pair, and $30 for each additional child.
