LAGUNA NIGUEL — An 11-year-old boy who was apparently not wearing a seat belt was critically injured and two others were hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a car rammed a signal pole, authorities said.
Shannon Fertal, 36, of Laguna Niguel was driving north on Pacific Island Drive when the accident occurred about 3:35 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Fertal and her son Patrick, 10, were listed in good condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, authorities said.
Tommy Weiss, 11, also of Laguna Niguel, was described as being in “extremely critical condition,” officials said.
The news release said Fertal and her son, seated in the front, were protected by air bags, and that none of the three was wearing a seat belt.
Firefighters sawed through the wreckage to free the crash victims in a delicate 14-minute operation, said Capt. Scott Brown of the Orange County Fire Authority.
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
