If you’re thinking of stamping, here are some pointers:
* Go to a stamp store and admit you’re a beginner. The selection of stamps and accessories can be overwhelming, but a salesperson can help decide on the materials best for you, as well as suggest books or magazines. Magazines to check out include the Stampers’ Sampler, Somerset Studio, Rubberstampmadness and the Rubber Stamper. “The Art of Rubber Stamping: Easy as 1-2-3!” by Michele Abel (Creative MN, 1991) and “The Complete Guide to Rubber Stamping” by Grace Taormina (Watson-Guptill, 1996) teach the basics.
* Peruse the ads in the aforementioned magazines for retailers near you, or consult “A Traveler’s Guide to Rubber Stamp Stores” by David Ward (Cornucopia Press, 1997).
* Conventions showcase a wide selection of stamps and new products. Stamp magazines list upcoming events, such as the May 3 convention at the Ventura County Fairground / Seaside Park (call [805] 644-3991). The next Original Rubber Stamp Convention is scheduled for July 12 and 13 at the Carson Community Center (call [310] 329-8555).
* Cruise the Internet to get the latest on stores, products and catalogs, as well as tips for stamp-friendly projects.
