Steve Johnson, Newbury Park: Johnson led the Panthers, who were expected to finish near the bottom in the Marmonte League, to a share of the league title and the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs. Johnson developed Jim Newton, a 6-foot-9 forward, into an offensive force in the second half of the season.
