Jurors said they were unable to decide whether Food Lion should receive punitive damages from ABC for the TV network’s hidden-camera investigation of the grocery chain. U.S. District Judge Carlton Tilley asked the Greensboro, N.C., jury to try again. A Nov. 5, 1992, report on “PrimeTime Live” accused Food Lion of selling old meat and working employees unfairly. Food Lion denied the allegations but lost millions of dollars in sales and stock value. The jury ruled last month that ABC and its employees committed fraud, trespassing and breach of loyalty when two producers faked references and hid their identity as reporters to work in Food Lion stores.
