The Moorpark Unified School District has picked a new director for Moorpark Project Pride, an after-school program for local youth.
Cynthia Frutos-Leyva, who has run similar programs in Santa Paula, has taken over the post vacated by Alberto Rios, who was arrested this summer on charges of performing unlawful sexual acts with a minor earlier this year. Rios has pleaded not guilty.
The program had been on hold until this month. Last week, Project Pride began offering a weekday evening homework study session at Flory Elementary School from 5 to 9 p.m.
Assistant Supt. Frank DePasquale said the district hopes to hire additional personnel for the 4-year-old program. He also praised Frutos-Leyva.
“She’s a very energetic and enthusiastic woman,” he said.
