In your listing of tourist steam railroads in the U.S. (“Getting Up Steam,” News, Tips & Bargains, Aug. 25), four of the five were in the East, but I would think that in a Los Angeles paper you would have had most of the trains in the West.
The roads you noted are fine, but there are many much closer for your readers. One would be the Cumbres and Toltec, which runs for 64 miles from Chama, N.M., to Antonito, Colo. Others would be the Roaring Camp & Big Trees in Felton, right next to Santa Cruz; the Heber Creeper in Utah and the Skunk out of Willits to Fort Bragg.
I recommend the Steam Passenger Service Directory for listings throughout the country. This booklet is available at many train shops in the Los Angeles area.
