Re “Wal-Mart Bars Album Over Gun Sale Lyrics,” Sept. 10:
Wal-Mart has done more harm to itself than Sheryl Crow’s lyrics could ever do to Wal-Mart. Crow’s verse is making a statement about the prevalence of violence in our society and the availability of guns in general. Had she used the name of Kmart, or Woolco, or Big 5 instead of Wal-Mart, the point would have been the same. Her purpose, as any intelligent person can see, was not specifically to attack Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart is finding offense where none was intended, and striking back unjustly. Its refusal to stock Crow’s CD is petty, punitive and ultimately un-American. This is yet another example of corporate power overstepping its bounds.

* Regarding Wal-Mart banning the sale of Crow’s latest album: Wal-Mart officials have it backwards! They should be promoting Crow’s latest album and banning the sale of guns from their stores, not the other way around.
