Hazardous-Waste Collection Effort Set for Next Month

With funding from a state grant, the city and the Costa Mesa Sanitary District will sponsor a hazardous-waste collection program in September to help residents dispose of antifreeze, motor oil, paints, pesticides, batteries, pool chemicals and explosives.
To participate, residents must make reservations by Sept. 6 to drop off potentially toxic products. Officials will set up times and locations by phone. The toll-free number is (888) 55-WASTE.
The city and the sanitary district will pay for the collection and disposal with a portion of a $75,000 grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
The agencies expect about 500 households to participate in the program, officials said.
Residents who cannot participate in the monthlong program may make other arrangements to dispose of hazardous wastes at one of Orange County’s four permanent waste sites. Information: (714) 834-6752.
