Crews Fight Fire With Fire in Oregon

Associated Press

Firefighters burned several hundred acres of dry range land in eastern Oregon to slow the growth of a 95,000-acre fire, one of several wind-swept blazes burning in nine Western states Friday.

“We’ve fought fire with fire, and we’re pretty successful today,” said Gary Meese, a division supervisor battling the fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.

The threat to the small town of Warm Springs eased as residents of about 70 houses were allowed to return home, and a convoy of 65 cars left a resort where they had been stranded in recent days. The fire has destroyed 11 homes.
