Don Heckman’s article about the lack of jazz on Los Angeles public radio stations featured some first-class whining from KPCC General Manager Rod Foster (“KPCC Change Leaves an On-Air Vacuum,” Aug. 11).
Foster said that KPCC was forced to change its programming (from “Classic American Music” to talk during the day and alternative rock at night) because of the threat of a lack of funding. Ridiculous. Instead of letting talk sneakily creep into its lineup, KPCC could have gone to its listenership and asked for help.
Cal State Northridge’s KCSN, a wonderful little station (the only real classical station in L.A., KKGO and KUSC having become classical lite), did just that and has remained an oasis of good programming.
