Parmenter Swims to Third Title

Jennifer Parmenter of Granada Hills won her third national title of the year Friday, defeating Maggie Bowen of Jackson, Miss., to take the 200-meter individual medley at the Phillips 66 national swimming championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Parmenter, a sophomore at L.A. Baptist High, finished in 2:15.93, .13 ahead of Bowen. Earlier this week, Parmenter won titles in the 400 freestyle and 400 individual medley. She won two additional titles at the 1995 spring nationals.

Baseball

Former major league pitcher Dave Schmidt has been hired as pitching coordinator at West Coast Baseball School in Agoura Hills.

Schmidt, a member of the UCLA Hall of Fame, pitched for five big league teams from 1981-92.

Basketball

Canoga Park High has hired Antony Villalobos as its girls’ coach.

Volleyball

Chaminade High has hired Marla O’Hara as its girls’ coach.

Football

Matt Lubick has been hired as a part-time assistant coach at Cal State Northridge. Lubick, the son of Colorado State Sonny Lubick, will coach cornerbacks.

Cal State Northridge is ranked No. 191 out of the 228 NCAA Division I-A and I-AA teams in the preseason Sagarin computer ratings.

Of the Matadors’ 11 opponents this season, the highest-ranked is Montana (47). The lowest is Cal State Sacramento (175).
