Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Minority Enrollment at Colleges on Rise

Minority student enrollment at U.S. colleges rose 5% in 1994--nearly double the increase of the previous year, according to a report released today by the American Council on Education. The report said, however, that gaps still exist in higher education between students of color and their white peers. About 23% of the nation’s high school graduates are black, Latino or American Indian, but these groups make up only 16% of the enrollment at four-year colleges, it said. The report said minority students have made steady advances in college enrollment since the mid-1980s.
