USC’s Adam Peterson, an unseeded senior who has endured a season of pain, upset second-seeded Cecil Mamiit of USC, 7-5, 6-3, Sunday to win the Pacific 10 Conference men’s singles tennis championship in the 96th Ojai Valley tournament.
Since October, Peterson has suffered a groin pull and twice sprained both ankles and Sunday he was playing on a broken toe. His national collegiate ranking fell from No. 7 to a tie at No. 98, which is last in the ITA/Rolex poll.
The turning point for Peterson on Sunday came when he broke Mamiit’s serve in the third game of the first set, which had eight deuces and 22 points.
In the women’s final, Stanford sophomore Julie Scott overcame first-set nerves to defeat USC freshman Karolina Bakalarova, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-2.
In women’s doubles, Keri Phebus and Paige Yaroshuk of UCLA defeated Amanda Augustus and Franceca La’O of California, 7-5, 6-4.
Stanford’s Paul Goldstein and Jim Thomas won the men’s doubles and Stanford won both the men’s and women’s team championships.
