Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : U.S. Seeks to Deport Aide to Jailed Cleric

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service will seek to deport a top aide to imprisoned Egyptian cleric Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman. A lawyer for Nasser Mohammed Ahmed claims that if his client is returned to Egypt he will be killed. Ahmed, an electrical engineer who lives in New York, was arrested after he entered a federal building for a conference with an immigration judge. Abdel-Rahman has been jailed for life for plotting to bomb New York City landmarks. Ahmed had been free on a $15,000 bond while contesting charges he had overstayed his visa.
