CITY SECTION TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS : Kordonskaya Power Wins Title
- Share via
With only three years of organized tennis behind her, Los Angeles High’s Ilona Kordonskaya defeated more experienced opponents by overpowering them in winning the singles title in the City Section girls’ individual tournament Friday at MountainGate Country Club.
A sophomore, Kordonskaya defeated Samantha Thompson of Westchester, 6-3, 6-2, in the final after making her way through a 32-player field that included 1993 champion Kendra Segura of Dorsey and junior Delana Daniels of Hamilton.
But after receiving a good draw and having it easy early in the tournament, Kordonskaya, who was seeded eighth, never got to play top-seeded Segura or third-seeded Daniels. Segura withdrew in the first round because of a leg injury, and Daniels had to forfeit in the quarterfinals after her coach got her to the match an hour late.
In doubles, Palisades assured itself of a championship when two of its teams made the final for the fourth time in 11 years.
Shana Miller and Lucy Zatloukal then defeated Rebecca Ebin and Stephanie Krauss, 6-2, 6-3.
