SAN CLEMENTE — As many as 24 Navy ships will be visible off the coast this week as part of a training exercise at Camp Pendleton.
More than 12,000 Marines, pilots and sailors will be practicing dozens of military operations over the next 11 days, including hostage rescues, humanitarian assistance missions, embassy evacuations and tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel, or TRAP, the type of mission involved in the rescue of downed Air Force pilot Scott O’Grady in Bosnia in June.
