OXNARD — An Oxnard man was listed in critical condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center on Tuesday night after being shot by an Oxnard police officer after attempting to rob a business on Bard Drive at Saviers Road, officials said.
The Oxnard Police Department late Tuesday would not release the name of the injured man nor the officer involved in the shooting.
A police spokesman said the shooting occurred about 6 p.m. after the suspect was spotted on San Simeon Drive. A patrol officer in the area “encountered the suspect” near San Simeon and Bard, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Gene Thayer, a watch commander.
Residents of the neighborhood, which is near Oxnard College, said they heard gunfire. Thayer could not confirm whether the suspect had a weapon or threatened the officer.
Detectives cordoned off the area for several hours to collect evidence for an investigation into the incident.
