La Canada Flintridge Councilman Jim T. Edwards said he will run for the Assembly seat currently held by Republican Bill Hoge in 1996 because the incumbent has told him he will run for an open state Senate seat.
“I think we need people with local government experience in Sacramento,” said Edwards, a former La Canada Flintridge mayor.
Edwards, 50, said he will begin campaigning next month to become the Republican representative for the 44th District.
Edwards said Hoge confirmed his candidacy for the seat being vacated by state Sen. Newton Russell (R-Glendale), who is leaving after 22 years because of term limits.
Hoge was unavailable for comment.
