Barry Sanders touched the ball four times. It didn’t matter. The Detroit Lions still had too many guns for the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars at Pontiac, Mich. The Lions scored on their first two possessions, plus one of Jacksonville’s, in a 19-3 exhibition victory.

Scott Mitchell played the first half for Detroit, completing eight of 16 passes for 128 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown play to Brett Perriman.

The Lions, who drew the wrath of the NFL for holding Sanders out of their first game at New England, let him play six snaps against the Jaguars.

Linebacker Jamir Miller was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season, becoming the second Arizona Cardinal player to break the NFL’s substance-abuse rules. A four-game suspension means that a player has tested positive twice or has had one positive test after reneging on a mandatory treatment program. It also puts Miller at Stage 3 of a three-stage program, meaning a one-year suspension for the next violation. . . . Cleveland Brown defensive tackle Larry Webster will sit out the first six regular-season games under a league-ordered suspension for drug use, team officials said.
