Westside : CLEANER AIR
How do you commute to the airport and clean up the environment at the same time? Try a seat on a bus powered by natural gas.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently launched a fleet of buses that burn natural gas instead of dirty diesel fuel. Two buses--on Line 561--make a loop from the San Fernando Valley through Westwood to Los Angeles International Airport.
The two buses are among 40 that the MTA has rolled out across Los Angeles County in hopes of doing its part to clean up the environment. Within a year, the agency plans to operate 300 such buses.
But all that clean air comes at a price. The natural gas buses cost an average of $250,000, as much as $50,000 more than their diesel counterparts.
