Citadel’s Bid to Bar Female Denied by Appeals Court

CHARLESTON, S.C. — An appeals court denied The Citadel’s second request Wednesday to bar Shannon Faulkner from the Corps of Cadets, removing another hurdle for her to become a cadet.
The U.S. Supreme Court is now The Citadel’s last shot at keeping Faulkner out of the Corps of Cadets on Saturday, when she arrives with freshmen for orientation.
The all-male military academy, a state-supported school, has asked Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist to keep Faulkner out of the corps so the full Supreme Court can consider whether the admissions policy is unconstitutional.
Faulkner was at The Citadel on Wednesday with her father and attorney checking out the barracks room and private bathroom where she will live if she is allowed to enter the corps.
Faulkner’s attorney, Val Vojdik, was pleased with the appeals court decision. “They don’t have a . . . right to continue to deny admission to women,” she said.
The state is developing a $10-million women’s leadership program at Converse College, but it hasn’t been approved by the courts.
