NEWPORT BEACH : Sales-Tax Measure Will Be Debated

A debate on Measure R, the proposed half-cent sales tax increase, will be held Wednesday at Villa Nova restaurant on West Coast Highway.
The debate will pit Jim Wood, publisher of The Coaster magazine and a supporter of the countywide tax increase, against Mark Petracca, an associate professor of political science at UC Irvine and an opponent of the tax.
Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m. and the debate will begin at 6 p.m. The forum is sponsored by Speak Up Newport, a nonprofit community organization formed to help residents keep up with local issues.
