SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — A 17-month-old boy died of head injuries Friday, and authorities arrested his mother’s boyfriend Saturday in connection with the death, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.
Leopoldo Ponce, 24, of San Juan Capistrano was arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder, Lt. Jay Mendez said.
Details into the death of the child, whose name was withheld pending further investigation, were scant Saturday.
Mendez said his mother brought him to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday for “some medical problem.” The boy died at the hospital.
Detectives later interviewed the boy’s mother and Ponce. Ponce was arrested after the interview, said Mendez, who had no additional information.
