Thousand Oaks school board members approved plans Thursday for a $2.3-million theater at Newbury Park High School.
Architects unveiled a blueprint for the 400-seat space, which will include a stage, ticket counter, concession stand, costume storage areas and dressing rooms for student dance and theater groups.
“It’s pretty nice,” said Jerry C. Gross, superintendent of the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
Students at the high school now perform in the gymnasium and a revamped classroom, Gross said.
“As someone who for 16 years did performances in a gym, I think it’s wonderful,” Trustee Dorothy Beaubien said.
He said the curtain will probably rise for the theater’s first performance in 1997.
School board members gave the design positive reviews at their meeting Thursday night before voting unanimously to approve the plans.
