World IN BRIEF : ALGERIA : Islamists Blamed for Jail Mutiny

Algeria’s state-run radio said the Armed Islamic Group organized an Algiers prison mutiny that left 100 people dead. The radio also confirmed a report that a prominent fundamentalist prisoner, Yalef Cherati, was killed in the mutiny. The Al Watan newspaper said Abdelhak Layada, an Armed Islamic Group founder, and Abdelkader Hachani, a leader of the Islamic Salvation Front, were the main organizers. The newspaper said a warden had smuggled in four pistols and six grenades.
