Lose some, win some.
Mario Mazariegos nailed the game-winning shot to give Manual Arts an upset victory over top seed Belmont, 6-5 on penalty kicks, in a City Section soccer quarterfinal match Friday at Belmont.
Despite having lost on the field to Dorsey, 1-0, earlier in the week, Manual Arts advanced to a semifinal match against Garfield on Wednesday. Dorsey was found to have an ineligible player after its victory, enabling Manual Arts to win by forfeit.
Belmont (16-1-1) held a 2-0 lead at the half on goals by Jaime Hernandez and Jose Salmeron, but the Toilers tied it on corner kicks by Jorge Mejia and Arturo Piedra. Goalkeeper Salvador Miranda made the crucial save in overtime.
Belmont gained the quarterfinals by beating Hamilton 4-1 on two goals by Jose Juarez.
Forfeits figured in the other half of the draw.
Garfield beat Franklin, 3-0, behind two goals by Juan Robles and a third from Romeo Cordoba. Franklin also made the quarterfinals despite a loss earlier in the week, to Roosevelt. Roosevelt (which gained its berth in the quarterfinals because of a forfeit the week before) also was found to have an ineligible player.
Banning 3, Fremont 2--Hopes for an all-Southeastern Conference final were dashed when Banning scored three straight goals in the second half to gain the semifinal against Birmingham.
