Camping Cookout
I enjoyed reading about camping at El Capitan State Beach (“Weekend Escape,” Oct. 16), but I couldn’t help but laugh when I read what the family brought for a cookout dinner: fusili pasta, sun-dried tomatoes, pine nuts, scallions and spicy chicken sausage. There was no mention of dessert, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was tiramisu or baked Alaska. Call me traditional, but there’s just something wrong with a cookout that doesn’t contain all the heavy, nasty foods that most of us remember fondly. You know, red meat, beans, maybe some corn-on-the-cob.
What makes so many camp in uncomfortable tents and put up with mosquitoes and not-so-clean bathrooms (or nonexistent ones) is that the great outdoors and sleeping under the stars brings out our pioneer spirits and makes us feel alive!
Leave all the fancy, citified cuisine at home.
