Crime Bill Funds Should Help 6th LAPD Division

City Councilman Richard Alarcon’s recent motion to create a sixth police division in the San Fernando Valley deserves the full support of every resident in the Valley.
The councilman points out the need to concentrate a larger police presence in the higher crime areas, while relieving the five existing police divisions of being too spread out to effectively control the high-crime pockets. While some resistance to his plan may grow out of a concern over available funds, the recently enacted federal crime bill should help implement this plan.
Councilman Alarcon has been successful in maintaining a gang truce in portions of the northeast Valley, but the recent murders of two elderly women in their homes and a businessman in Van Nuys emphasizes the need for an increased and more visible presence of the police on our streets.
