OUTLOOK
Starting his fifth year as the girls’ coach, Heusser has a good feel for his team and what it hopes to accomplish this year. He believes the Cavaliers might have a good chance at reaching the playoffs. “We have a good defense and good depth, but offense is still a question mark,” Heusser said. One factor that might help answer the question is the return of Torres at guard. Averaging 8.7 points last season, Torres was an honorable mention all-league selection. Whether she can play at a higher level remains to be seen, but Heusser thinks she could break through this season. He also is counting on some new players, including Ching-Sam, who has only played one year of basketball. She’s being counted on to help with rebounding and do some scoring. Also, there’s Huynh, who has never played the game but whom Heusser calls a “very talented” athlete. Heusser thinks Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos will fight for the title, but figures there’s hope for a playoff spot.
