SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Quartz Hill Takes Fight Out of Muir

Quartz Hill High scored four touchdowns in the second quarter and stunned Pacific League champion Muir, 33-9, Friday night in a Southern Section Division II first-round playoff game at Pasadena City College.

It was the first loss for Muir Coach Mike Harrison since taking over the team in the fourth game of the season. Five Muir players were ejected in the fourth quarter for fighting.

After a scoreless first quarter, Quartz Hill (6-3-2) opened the scoring on a one-yard run by Jeff Diamond. Moments later, Matt Adranga blocked a punt and Dion Finley returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.

Diamond (14 carries, 49 yards) scored two more touchdowns in the quarter on runs of two yards and one yard. Finley set up one score with an interception and picked off two passes in the game.

Rebel quarterback Damein Kendrid completed five of 15 passes for 140 yards, including a 66-yarder to Raul Gomez to set up Diamond’s third touchdown with 13 seconds left in the second period.

The Rebels racked up 259 yards in offense. Jeremiah Harris had 14 carries for 43 yards, and Brian Pereira added 36 yards in nine carries.

The Mustangs (8-3) were held to 177 yards in offense and were penalized 10 times for 95 yards. Muir’s top running back, Shaun Haslip, was held to 34 yards in 10 carries.
