PREP ROUNDUP : DeVera Leads Villa Park Past Canyon in Girls’ Tennis

Villa Park pulled off a mild upset and moved into first place with a 10-8 victory over Canyon in a Century League girls’ tennis match Monday at Canyon.
Villa Park (8-1, 4-0 in league) is ranked eighth in Orange County and Canyon (12-1, 3-1) is No. 4.
Faye DeVera of Villa Park won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-0, 6-0. She was the only player to sweep. Villa Park won six singles sets and four in doubles.
In another Century League match:
Foothill 9, Orange 9 (Foothill wins on games, 78-65)--Suzanne Schubbert and Wendy Hayashi defeated Lori Goetsche and Ho Ly in doubles, 6-4, in a pivotal set for the visiting Knights (2-2 in league).
In the Golden West League:
Saddleback 16, Tustin 2--Loan Ly and Tuyen Le won their three doubles sets without losing a game and Cyndi Cao swept in singles to improve to 15-0 for host Saddleback (5-0, 3-0).
In the Sunset League:
Los Alamitos 14, Marina 4--Melissa Rosenthal won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for Los Alamitos (10-1, 3-0), the second-ranked team in Orange County.
In the Empire League:
Katella 14, Kennedy 4--Patti Villaroman, Kristen Sakamoto and Megan Henderson swept in singles for visiting Katella (8-3, 4-0).
In the North Orange County water polo tournament:
Brea-Olinda 9, University 4--The sixth-ranked Wildcats advanced to the quarterfinals with the second-round victory. Tad Murphy led Brea-Olinda (15-1) with three goals and teammate Matthew Flesher added two.
In their first-round victory, the Wildcats defeated Servite’s junior varsity team, 15-6. The Friars were led by the varsity’s star player, Rob Mattivi, who scored four goals. Tad Murphy led Brea-Olinda with six and Eric Matthews scored five. Brea-Olinda will next face Tustin Friday at Tustin High.
Costa Mesa 24, Sunny Hills 4--Robert Grayeli scored seven goals in the Mustangs’ second-round victory. Steve Popov scored six. Grayeli scored five in a 22-5 victory over Long Beach Poly.
James Comfort had seven goals, including five against Poly, in the two games for the Mustangs (11-5).
