Chatman Rushes for 211 Yards; Costa Mesa Wins

BELLFLOWER — Costa Mesa running back Charles Chatman rushed for a game-high 211 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-16 victory over Lakewood Mayfair in a nonleague game Thursday night at Bellflower High.
Chatman has rushed for 552 yards this season. Costa Mesa is 3-0.
Ball control was the game plan for the Mustangs, who ran 36 plays to Mayfair’s 14 in the first half, rushing for 173 yards to the Monsoons’ 59 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, Costa Mesa took advantage of a two-yard punt by Mayfair from its 27-yard line. Five plays later, Chatman dived over from the one-yard line for a 6-0 lead.
After another short punt, this one by Costa Mesa, Mayfair took possession on the Mustang 47-yard line. Four plays later, Brady Green caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Augustine on his fingertips and Mayfair took a 7-6 lead.
Chatman scored again from three yards to put the Mustangs ahead, 14-7, at halftime.
